Flies for Largies

OK chaps

Toxic is returning to the Richtersveld next week and I have a score to settle with those mother trucker Largies that swim around in those pools acting as if they own the place. Which brings me to my question- what are your most successful largie flies?

When I was last there I was throwing big fritz's etc. The pattern seemed to do the trick but on this trip I would like to really target largies for the most part of the trip.

I read the articles in TCFF re largies with interest and have some ideas as a result but I'd like to hear from the largemouth yellow experts on the forum.

SO come out with it! Expose your largie X-flies!

When I fished with Ian Couryer on Sat, we used his Tri-mac and Go-to Flies, check the Aug edition of TCFF.

Brings me to my next question as well- how important do you guys rate the colour of your flies? I was thinking of tying up some flies in peach/ gold/ silver colours with some flash (and chartreuse of course)- try and get a general small smallmouth coloration theme going...

We used silver and black with gold flash, olive and black...

ja bru! Flow is even lower than the last trip... I am afraid to even think of how nice the river will be looking...

Think I am getting addicted to the place.

For clear water conditions I'd choose less flashy flies in the more natural colours like the olives and browns. My GOTO fly in dirty water is a standard black/perl chenile bugger with marabou tail and holo flash in the tail. Also had some good results on SF fibre flies tied to immitate the Vleikurper and Southern Mouthbrooder (Off White, Mackerel, Olive)

If there is a lot of baitfish in the Richtersveld waters you should be tying some white pink & white grey flies too. Also remember that the baiitfish are usually quite drab but at the beginning of the spawning season for them they get dressed in their sunday best and turn a little more gold.

Our best producers on the last Christiana trip was an OLD gold coloured fly, bearing in mind the bad viz and high flows.

Marabou buggers in olive & brown with varying degrees of flash should do the trick. I'm not a big fan of chartreuse for LM.

For dirty water I'd still stick to a big black bugger with dumbell eyes, immitates the small barbel well and I believe they big Largies chow down on little barbel like a hungry etheopian on a grain of rice.

The grey flies could also be taken as moggel/muddies/juvenile yellows though the juvenile yellows are more silvery than grey and need more flash, they also go brighter and more yellow as all yellows do when the water heats up.

Make sure you have a good selection of flies in the colours and also various degrees of flash. You will also need to make sure you have weights ranging from virtually neutral density to divebombers.
