Looks good mate. I like your idea of incorporating a trailing hook. That should sort the tail nippers out!

Yeah - Philip from eikendal suggested I do that when I asked him how to make a pencil popper.

Good experienced advice you got there. You need only experience 4 leeries climbing over each other to get to your popper, and every single one missing by nipping at the tail so many times to start thinking along those lines.

Don't see why it should'nt work. After all, the speed with which you gonna be stripping it in, is to cause a "frantic" action on the surface.

The question is not so much whether it will work, of that I have no doubt! Finding the fish is the biggest problem!

Thinking back to last year, the guys who had the greatest success are the guys who really worked hard at it, patrolling the banks and actively engaged in seeking out the fish. I personally was up at 3am every morning for two weeks on the trot, and I got my fish. Very difficult to keep this kind of pace up though.
