Default Kathu / Sishen Area - any fishing?

    Hi Guys

Anyone know of any fishing that can be had in the Kathu / Sishen area? Rivers especially...or any dams too.

    Regards
    Mike

THat is the Kalahari, there is no water there.
Your best bet will be the Orange, but that is a couple of km's away.

So I must take my own water with?

Yeah I saw the Orange is the closest major river...but thought there should be at least a few rivers...looks like it on the map.

The rivers you see on the map are all dry river beds, they only flow when there is decent rain.

I always wanted to catch one of the big fish swimming in the "OOG" at Kuruman. You have the fountain in the centre of Kuruman, with a huge pool where the water comes out of the ground. In this pool, there are a couple of big fish swimming. Not sure you are allowed to fish for them. But have been tempted, everytime I drove thru there.

Excellent bass fishing at the dam in Kathu called "Kei Appel".
Reports of fish over 4kg there. Could be Florida strain judging by the quick growth rate and size.
There are also lots of carp and barbel. A float tube would be advisable.
Closest river fishing is about 200 kms drive to the Orange at Upington or 190 km to the Vaal at Schmidtsdrift.

I've heard about the bass at Khai-Appel...thus the 7wt is going with.
I'll bum an Ark, boat, dinghy from one of the guys at Sishen, if they have.

I thought about going to Douglas on the "way back"...but it's a little too far out.

Mike, why not stop at Christiana on the way back.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

Then you have to catch a 10kg+ LM , sight fished from the bank, just to prove to Bertu that it can be done.

The mine also have a bass club for members only, but I'm sure if you twist someone's arm they will let you have a cast.

The water is crystal clear, like tap water, so a stealthy approach would be advisable.

Be advised, take everything you need with you, there is no tackle store and absolutely zero flyfishing goodies in the entire area, make sure you have enough bass flies!
