Ya, South Island, be flexible, try and base yourself with options - like Reefton for example. Read John Kent's book, spend lots of time in the local pubs picking info out of guides / oter fishermen. Get up early and onto the beat you intend fishing early, then make breakfast. Get a reeds atlas and look for rivers not covered in John Kent's book. Look for more remote roads / access points. Hire a guide for the first day. Look at the weather report each evening. Enjoy the beer - buy "the complete guide to New Zealand Beer" Practice casting into the wind for a few weeks before your trip.
