Mmmmmm, interesting.....
Yes, there are quite a few Groot Rivers in SA. The Groot I'm referring to runs into the Doring River in the Cederberg.
Matt, are you referring to another?
If so, then my advice is totally useless.
I might have my rivers deurmekaar, but as far as I know the Grootrivier is in the Klein Karoo and only got SM, not Clanwiliam yellows? Are there more than one Grootrivier?

Yes he is refering to the one in the karoo, its part of the gouritz system.
But your info is not useless at all, might just be a trip worth going.

The Grootrivier in the Gourits system - take a Olive Woolly bugger and any orange fly. River might flow now, otherwise you gonna fish in pools so normal nymphing is not an option. Don't forget about the carp - great fun to take and the Olive Woolly Bugger works a charm on them as well.

I did the Doring Whitewater rafting thing a month ago and we drifted though kilometers of extremely attractive water. A local farmer's son accompanied us and told us that he catches Clanwilliams there regularly. He says that there are only big fish around due to the prevalence of bass (ok - we all know and understand this).
Are there any places on the Doring which are fishable without being "stream X's" or which require secret handshakes etc to obtain access. Ie, with public access? We exited the river at a weir near a bridge across the river. This area looks accessible.
Hi there Neil
The best public water is on the Groot River. Basically you go through Ceres and keep straight for 140 kms (40 ntar and about 100 dirt). There is a turnoff to the left which is signposted Die Mond (Truck Tire as a marker). Up to here the road is normally very good. Follow the turnoff and you get to a campsite where you can also rent small and very rundown cottages. Telephone number is 0233170668. I've fished this place a lot and it is very well worth visiting for a weekend.
This place is spectacular. You can camp right on the water but for the fishing it is best to hike away from the campsite. There are also quite a few spots along the river where you can view some well preserved rock art.
There is also a place called Mount Cedar on the Groot River. It's upstream from Die Mond and much more upmarket. Not a bad place but I've not fished it, so can't comment.
Cheers

Thanks MC. Will go up there for a weekend sometime. Up till what month would you recommend it. Warm enough for camping but still enough flow?
I've been to Mount Cedar but the water there consists of deep, dark pools. No chance of sight fishing and one needs a boat or float tube since reeds basically inhibit access. Hiking upstream from Mount Cedar might be the way to go.
Not sure where your mate's farm is Matt. But if you are on the Groot then try and get access to the confluence with the Gouritz... use it, dont use it. Give me a call if you need intros.
