    Default Ben Joh

    Hi All

I am planning on going to Ben Joh early Sat morning. Any advise on flies tactics etc... or even better ... any experienced 'Yellow" catcher able to meet me on the water to help.

i would love to join you, but no fishing this wknd for me unfortunately...

flies that produced for me are size 14 grey nymphs, glass rainbow or blue bead head, PT wing case, large copper wire ribbing and tan holo dub mixed with haresear dub to pick out longer fibres...tail of PT as well.

olive caddis dropper as well sort of size 12 or 10 as well.

what i've noticed lately is there are lots of mayfly nymphs sort of 14-16 under the rocks and LOTS of olive/chartreuse caddis larva under as well.

so have a look and fish accordingly.

had great luck further up with the muddies when the yellows weren't around on a chartreuse rockworm pattern.

just fish slow and you should pick some up

    Hi Gazzarowan

Thanks for the reply and tips... wow you have a lot of knowledge.

I have never tied a fly so I will have to rely on the bought ones.

I will check the rocks and try and match.

    Thanks again.

The water was flowing at a hectic rate but was dropping during the day.

I managed two small yellows on a GRHE just below the island , got lots of muddies mostly in the mouth on a red rock worm.... and was smashed by a big barbel after about 10 minutes into the fight.

Sorry no pics but I don't have a water proof camers.

Nice water. Only problem is...it gets very crowdy over weekends.

Crowded?? More like fishing shoulder to shoulder these days...give it a skip rather. Even Eendekuil is less crowded.

Ya..I agree, rather fish Eendekuil or Eastco. Big water, lots of space, big fish...and cheaper than Ben-Joh.

Ben Joh is actually the bit where the baities go, the fly fishing side is Vaal de Sioleh or something. If I remember correctly, R150 per person?
Go opposite side to Hakuna, R50 per person.

Yeah...Benjoh...fly fishers are charged R150 to get in...papgooiers like R50.

Hakuna is being sold for development...no use going there. Not much there anyway.
