Default Elandspad Weir pool Sharptooth Catfish

Catfish sighted in the pool below the 2nd weir on Elandspad beat 1. It either got there under it's own steam or was introduced by some genius. It may or may not be a threat to the trout population amongst other things. IMO, once they get going they eat EVERYTHING. What should be done if anything?

1st try and establish how many catfish you are talking about.

How are you guys planning on getting them out of the system???

I don't think it's a major problem at all. Sure, it's not great, but I'm convinced that they have been there for as long as they have been in the Breede, and just like the eels, have not yet decimated the trout population as many people think they might do. I recon there is a lot of migration to and from the Breede. I also don't think that the Elandspad is ideal habitat for the barbel (if such a habitat exists). You will probably find that , as soon as the river flows stronger, the barbell will go back down to the Breede. If the barbel breed in the Elandspad, there would certainly be a helluva lot of food for the trout, that's for sure.
The bass have been in that system for ever, and there are no serious ill effects on the trout populations. I'm not too concerned, but if i do happen to catch one, it will certainly be "removed".

We should safely capture the catfish, and then transfer it to a safe dam, where it can, safely live until its dying day. Undisturbed by fluff chucking fly fisherman.

Even though I voted for killing it, I agree with Korrie - catch it and relocate it to a dam.

Mmmmmm, this sounds like a really "effective" way to sabotage relations with the authorities. A lot of progress has been made with w.r.t. co-operation between Flyfishers and Cape Nature Conservation. Public statements like these benefit nobody and are very short sighted. "Ignorance" of the law is no excuse.

For those that don't know what Mr Whiskas is capable of........
