    Default Stilbaai: shocking experience?

This morning I started out bright and early, got at the water just before 06:00 tied on a fly, waited another 10 minutes for a bit of light to see where I must go, and started casting the fly . There was a lot of movement in the water with baitfish all over the show and it was not long before I hooked the first of many small Leeries. Had chases, misses, strikes and a lot of fun. Started out to the right of the jetty on some rocks and then moved way to the left hand side next to some grass banks. Beautiful clean water and lots of fish, the biggest not more than 30cm. One of these days I must start taking some bigger spicemen.

I stood in knee deep water on a sandbank, playing around, walking in the direction of some baitfish. Then everything happened all at once and together. I just heard this funny sound like klikkkkklakk fu*ckinckllooooketyklak!!!! my leg was numb and I lost the grip on my rod. I heard someone screaming like a small girl and realised it was me. I just knew I was dead!

I stood in the knee deep water and thought I must have stepped on a live Escom wire straight from Koeberg, and then I realised it must have been an electric ray - fu*kit, I really did not know there were any of these monsters in our waters. After that I really walked slowly, trying just to get out of the water, and would you believe it, I found another three of these beautiful buggers. Lying very still just under the sand waiting for a poor unsuspecting Fly Fisher to cross their paths.

Now my question. Any help from you on how not to get shocked? will it help to wear shoes seeing that the barefoot option clearly did not work?

    Good advice that.

I would hate such an experience I'm allergic to electric shocks. It upsets the drinking rythm.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

i have had an experience with an electric ray as well.

i was diving off the Natal coast and found a sandy bank full of big sand mussels...so was digging them up and buggering around when next minute my shoulders felt as though they had been pulled from their sockets!!!

i prodded the thing out with my fins and it just cruised off slowly.

    man those things are violent!

HAHAHAHAHA that is absolutely hilarious. I fish the area a hell of a lot and have never had this happen to me, at least now i know for future

I always fish with booties in Stilbaai, not only is there glass and other crap in the water but i have seen some monsterous Crabs before, pincers big enough to leave you with 1 toe less!
