Hi Gerrit,
Please could you put the pics in jpeg for me? My firewall blocks the imageshack format. Really want to see your work of art
Thanks
I'm really intrigued by the late Theo's mussel fly so I thought I'd play around with some materials. Mine is a bit narrower compared to the original cause I want to get down quicker and it's pointless to tie a 10/0 mussel as the poor bugger won't even be able to mouth it....
Hook: Gamakatsu B10 S #6.
Bead: 3.8mm Gold Tungsten.
Thread: Danville 210 Flat waxed Nylon White.
Weight: 1st layer - 11x 0.20" lead wire, 2nd layer - 10x 0.20" lead wire.
Tag: Orange thread.
Body: Black thread.
Rib: Gold flash. (Growth lines)
Head / White spot at hinge: White Deer Hair first trimmed with a blade to get the shape then burnt with a cautery. A lighter almost screwed my head....

Sure here they are but doubt that they are work of art. It was just important for me today to get'em "on paper". I'll fine tune the next batch.

Hey, thats pretty cool, well done. I personally think those will work! When are you going to test drive them or do you need assistance?
Nice one G.
Have any of you seen one of these mussels with their heads (or whatever they are) sticking out of the shell? whether in a picture or on the water?
It Would be interesting to see.
i have seen them yup...its a small pinky orange-ish coloured flesh that sticks out a bit...
just a hint of colour.
Gerrit , your fly is very close to the original , i had the pleasure to fish with Oom Theo toe hy nog daar was.
We used to use embroidery thread one would dip into melted candle wax , as you pull the thread out of the wax you would " Flatten " it between your fingers ( brand die dinges uit jou uit). Oom Theo also used the GOLD tinsel of a Richelieu Brandy bottle for his ribbing , the Gold & Silver flash from a Chrunchie wrapper as a tail and PTFE tape or Waterbuck hair as the head.
We caught a bunch of yellows and muddies at the old Elrina spa , just below the barage. Like they say - ' In die goeie ou dae"
Hi Ricko,
Dis goeie nuus!!!
Ek blaai netnou so deur Bill Steel se freshwater flies boekie en kom toe af op 'n Adolf. As jy vir daai vlieg 'n wit bead opsit en net groter bind dan sĂȘ ek jou jy is in groot besigheid.
